A little bit about us!

The Five A Day Market Garden is situated in the beautiful village of Englefield, West Berkshire. We are a not-for-profit community supported project which aims to engage the rural and urban community by:
- selling affordable, healthy, naturally grown produce
- educating children, adults and older people within an outdoor therapeutic environment, with a focus on art, nature and fruit and vegetable production
- encouraging people to get involved through volunteering
- offering a unique team building experience to corporate organisations

In March 2017, Pam Goddard, the Project Co-ordinator at Five A Day received an award from the High Sheriff of the Royal County of Berkshire in recognition of dedicated service to Five A Day and enhancing the life of the community.

We have recently been shortlisted for an award from Bayer / Farming and Countryside Education! Watch this space!

Children and Young People

hy should the adults have all the fun?  We welcome kids as well!

European students from Brussels get creative with willow!

Five A Day Market Garden is a fantastic venue for children and young people.  It offers a safe environment for children to enjoy practical and hands on activities based around growing food, getting up close with wildlife and learning about sustainability (in a fun way of course). We can also incorporate Eco Art in the sessions as well.  The garden is situated within the beautiful Englefield Estate and has plentiful parking.

We run day-time and  / or evening sessions for any children’s group which may include school groups, after school clubs, scouts, girl guides, youth groups and community groups.

School Groups

Five A Day Market Garden can offer half day or full day visits to school children from key stage 1 right through to key stage 5.  The visits are curriculum based and all appropriate risk assessments and appropriate health and safety documentation are provided.   The visits are co-ordinated by Pam Goddard, the Five A Day Project Co-ordinator who is qualified in CEVAS (Countryside Education Visit Accreditation Scheme) and has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Biology.  Pam has wide experience of running school visits both at Five A Day Market Garden and at Rushall Organic Farm with a range of ages and abilities.  For larger groups, she is assisted by her team of experienced sessional teaching staff.  All staff helping with school visits are DBS checked.

“We had a brilliant morning and really enjoyed all the exciting activities you planned for us.  When we got back to school, we couldn’t stop talking about all the fun things we did and all the new things we had learnt!”

Visits are very much hands on and are centred around the key topics of food growing, wildlife and sustainability.  However, each visit is individually planned and can accommodate other themes as required.

We can accommodate up to 60 children at one time and a short pre-school visit is encouraged. Prices start at £7 per child for a half day visit and £12 for a full day visit.  However, please note that a minimum charge is applied.

Wilson Road Primary school teacher, Sarah commented:

Thanks for today and all your hard work in making the day fantastic for the children, they had a wonderful time (and so did all the adults)!  The children will be talking about their visit for many days to come!  I hope that we will be able to enjoy visits to the market garden in the future.’

Ella’s Kitchen

We are delighted to be working with organic food company Ella’s Kitchen!  Their fantastic support enables us to give 1000 children a year the opportunity to spend a half a day with us learning about food growing and half a day at Rushall Farm getting up close with the farm animals!

The children do lots of sensory based activities such as the feely box challenge, the pumpkin trail, food tasting, the worm competition and much more!  They also enjoy a scrumptious Ella’s Kitchen smoothie!

'We just wanted to say thank you so much for the amazing visit funded by Ella's
Kitchen. The children (and staff!!) had an amazing time and we really
appreciated it. It was such a valuable learning experience'. May 2015.

After School Groups

Our after school groups visit from late Spring through to the Autumn.  The emphasis is hands on activities and lots of fun, fun, fun! Visits are tailored to suit a range of ages, with a focus on areas such as:

  • Grow your own veg
  • Healthy eating and being active
  • Get Wild about Wildlife
  • Environmental Art

One of our most popular activities is The Vegetable Challenge, which is a great activity for the younger aged groups such as Beavers, brownies and Scouts.  Children are divided in to smaller groups and compete in a range of vegetable inspired activities around the garden such as the Broad Bean Relay and Pea shooting.  Children go home with a seasonal goodie bag.

Our after school group sessions cost from £4.00 per child depending on visit content and length. We have a minimum charge of £50.00 for an after school visit.

For further information, contact Pam Goddard the Project Co-ordinator, email pam@fiveaday.org.uk or phone 07939676050
